Only the Chimney Stays, Zlatko Ćosić, 2010, video, 5:30 Fifteen years after the war ended, I felt it was time to address the past. As the result of the war, I lost my Yugoslavian identity and refused to follow others in choosing national and religious affiliations, which were only worsening the conflict. The neutral position I chose partially inspired my work Only The Chimney Stays. The fragmentation of the visuals and sounds are reflections of the displacement of people, experiences and the way we process memories. The poetic narrative is the recollection of my personal experience and the effects of not belonging here or there. Mixed with uneasy memories is a simple beauty, which moves me forward to fully enjoy my life but still be aware of the issues that surround us. :: video, sound, editing by Zlatko Ćosić :: photography by Rachel Ćosić, Zlatko Ćosić and Ivo Ćosić :: song "Equinox" by John Consiglio (John Consiglio: guitars, radio, FX and Charlie Dent: percussion loops) ONLY THE CHIMNEY STAYS (5:30) [VIDEO] EXHIBITIONS :: Des Lee Gallery, St. Louis, May 14-15, 2010 :: MFA Satellite Show, Lemp Brewery, St. Louis, May 21, 2011 :: Atelje 26, Students' City Cultural Center, Belgrade, Serbia, June 22-24, 2011 :: Banja Luka College, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, June 24, 2011 :: Kemper Art Museum and Steinberg Auditorium, Washington University, St. Louis, presentation of video installations with discussion about the book The Cellist of Sarajevo and photos by Gilles Peress, October 13 and 14, 2011 :: CologneOFF, International Video Art Festival, A Virtual Memorial Vilnius, JCIC Vilnius & Kedainiai Regional Museum, Lithuania, September 23-October 29, 2013 :: Twenty Years Later - Films from the Former Yugoslavia, screening and panel discussion, St. Louis International Film Festival, UM-St. Louis, Gallery 210, November 20, 2013 :: Still Adjusting, solo exhibition, Gallery 210, UMSL, St. Louis, January 25 - March 22, 2014 :: VideoBardo, International Videopoetry Festival, Biblioteca Nacional, Buenos Aires, Argentina, November 11, 2016 :: UN[dis]Criminate, project by The Unstitute, November 2016 :: Video Vortex XI, Video in Flux: Art, Activism & Archives as part of the Sristi Outpost, a collateral of the Kochi-Muzeris Biennial, Kochi, India, February 23-25, 2017 :: The Inaugural International Autonomous Biennale (Cf Project), GradCAM, The Research Pavilion, Pavilion 2017, 57th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy, September 29 – October 1, 2017 :: Refugee Film Collection, The W:OW Project - We Are One World, artvideoKOELN, 2018 :: SWIC, Arts & Humanities Theater, Belleville, IL, October 17, 2019 :: Alphabet Art Centre, The New Museum of Networked Art, The Refugee Film Collection , December 1-31, 2021 PRESS :: Webster’s Zlatko Ćosić Portrays Nature Through Motion Painting by Yue Zhang, The Journal, November 16, 2016 |
